Raigad Fort was capital of great Maratha king Chatrapati Shivaji. Its a massive fort on Sahyadri mountain range at a height of 425 meters with great historical importance. It is also known as ‘the Gibralter of the east’. Raigad Fort is situated in Raigad district of Maharashtra at a distance of about 140 km south from Mumbai. Best time to visit Raigad is from October to March when the climate remains dry and cool.
History:
It is believed that the fort was constructed by Chandrarao Mores in 1030. After that it comes under the controll of various dynasties. Finally Shivaji gained control over it in 1656. After getting the controll, Shivaji renovated and expanded it and named it Raigad.
