Pandharpur is one of most visited pilgrimage city of Maharashtra. It is situated in the Solapur district of Maharashtra on the bank of river Bhima. The river Bhima is also known as Chandrabhaga. The city is about 74 km away from sholapur railway station. Large number of pilgrims and devotees comes every day here for worship. Aashadi Ekadashi (June- July) and Kartiki / Kartik Ekadashi (November) are most important dates for Pandharpur pilgrimage. Every year thousands and thousands of people from Maharashtra and other part of India comes Pandharpur to celebrate Aashadhi and Kartiki Ekadashis. October – November is very attractive with Navararathri and Diwali festivals. There are many temples in Pandharpur, among which Vithoba Temple is the main temple which is situated in the central part of the town. The rituals which are performed everyday in the temple are Kakda Aarati, Mahapooja, Mahanaivedhya, Poshakh, Dhooparati, Padyapooja, Shejarti etc. Behind Vithoba temple, there is a temple of Rukmini, the consort of Vithoba. Lord Vithoba is one of the form of Lord Vishnu. The temples are beleived to be very old. One can see some inscriptions in the temple which are of 13th century.
Legend:
It is believed that once Lord Vitthal (Vishnu) had visited this place to meet devoted son called Pundalik. But at that time, Pundarik was busy to serve his parents (father : Janudev, mother: Satyavati). So Pundarik gave a brick to Lord Vittal tostand and request him to wait. After serving his parents, he came to the Lord and apologizes for neglecting Him. But the Lord was very pleased by seeing his devotion towards the parents and aked him to request a boon. Pundalik requested him to remain on earth and bless all His devotees. The Lord granted his wish and lived here forever in the form of Vithoba which means God who stood upon a brick.
