Karnala Bird Sanctuary, Raigad district, Maharashtra

Karnala Bird Sanctuary is very beautiful sanctuary situated on Mumbai-Goa highway in the Raigad district in Maharashtra. Karnala Bird Sanctuary is spread over 12.11 square km. It is about 50 km away from Mumbai and 10 km away from Panvel. It is a heaven for bird lovers. More than 150 species of birds can be seen here. During winter time, one can see some species of migratory birds like blackbird, the bluethroat, the red breasted flycatcher etc. Some rare birds like Ashy Minivet, three toed kingfisher and Malabar Trogon can also be seen here. Among other birds, red vented bulbul, myna and owl are abundantly seen here.Though its a bird sanctuary, but some other animals like Wild boar, common langur, jungle cat, muntjac, fox, hare an also be easily seen.Trees like Koshimb, mango, nana, kulu, kalam, asana are found evrywhere in the sancuary. It has become a popular picnic spot among local people.

Best time to visit: October to April.

Private and state buses plies from Mumbai and Panvel to Karnala Bird Sancuary on regular basis. One can take, taxi or auto from panvel to reach here. Nearest railway station is at Panvel at a distance of about 10 km. Nearest airport is at Mumbai (about 50 km).
